Youth in Politics (#YiP)

Youth in Politics (#YiP) supported and built civic capacity for youth to lead and engage in politics. We supported students in participating in diverse civic action projects, including organizing school board trustee candidate meetings.

Our participating schools ([insert link to Location page here]) promoted the involvement of students and their families in the 2018 school board trustee elections.

  • We facilitated student participation and the development of knowledge on issues affecting them.
  • We supported students in engaging and mobilizing their families to participate in school board elections.
  • We engaged adults from marginalized communities on civic participation and the governance of their schools and communities.

Our Approach

Youth in Politics was explicitly collaborative and worked within a framework of shared authority and decision-making. Our principles of shared authority included collaborative teaching and knowledge sharing, as well as promoting and developing relationships with students, their families, teachers, and the wider community.

We promoted shared responsibility for teaching and learning among learners and teachers.

We facilitated Youth Participatory Action through overall capacity building and the development of leadership competencies.

We used an experiential learning framework to support the implementation of community-based initiatives, enabling students to connect classroom learning with community life and governance.
